The world is mourning the death of Gene Wilder. Wilder was a master of comedy. The thousands of fans who thronged cinema theaters across the world to catch his latest movies will miss the comic actor. Gene Wilder had many roles that he made famous. Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory – Willie Wonka
Wilder was not the first choice for the lead role with the casting director spoilt for choice; Wilder had to compete with great actors of the time. Lady luck was smiling down on him and eventually he got the part. The movie was not an instant hit. The film gained traction and eventually became a favorite with children.
Young Frankenstein – Dr. Frankenstein
Wilder starred in the film and co-wrote the script with Mel Brooks. Mary Shelley’s horror novel Frankenstein was transformed into a funny horror film. Mel Brooks who directed the movie cites it as being Wilder’s finest work.
The Producers – Leo Bloom
Wilder teamed up with Mel Brooks where Wilder played the lead actor and got a nomination for an Academy Award.
Blazing Saddles – Jim the “Waco Kid."
In this satirical western movie where the town receives its first black sheriff, Wilder was cast as Jim the “Waco Kid”. Directed by Mel Brooks, the film was nominated for three Oscars.
Stir Crazy – Skip Donahue
In this collaboration with legendary Richard Pryor, the two actors play two friends framed for robbing a bank. The great acting from these two comedy powerhouses enabled the film to be the third biggest film of 1980 and made over $100 million at the box office.
Gene Wilder’s legacy will live long in the memories of his fans and admirers. Wilder was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1980 and lost the battle to the disease on August 29, 2016 at the age of 83.
